Philanthropists support JHS student who walks seven kilometres to school

Two philanthropists who are also senior police officers, have presented educational materials and a bicycle to a Junior High School (JHS) student of the Bakpa Avedo DA Basic School in the Volta Region to support her education.

Superintendent of Police (Supt) Dr Foster Nanewortor, Head of the Psychology Department of the Ghana Police Hospital, and his wife, Cadet Officer (C/O) Ms Alice Lawson, made the presentation to Bethel Amedza, a JHS Three student of the school.

Bethel reportedly walks about seven kilometres from her village to school each day to access education.

The donation, included a bicycle, stationery and other educational materials and was intended to ease the burden on Bethel and her family while encouraging her to remain committed to her studies.

Presenting the items, Dr Nanewortor, a professional counsellor, said he and his wife were inspired by Bethel’s determination to pursue her education despite the distance she travelled daily and decided to support her.

“As a community, we must do everything to encourage people like Bethel to aspire higher and achieve more for society.

“I want to use this opportunity to call on other benevolent individuals and organisations to come and support people like this because she has proven that distance cannot stop a child with a dream,” he said.

Mr Emmanuel Wogbe Klukpuie, the School Improvement Support Officer (SISO), expressed appreciation to the couple for the gesture, saying the support would motivate Bethel and other learners to take their studies seriously.

He said Bethel’s commitment to her education had already earned her recognition, including placing third in an inter-school spelling competition in which she represented her school.

Mr Klukpuie said Bethel and two other learners also won gold in an inter-school Bible quiz competition.

“Bethel’s story is a beautiful reminder that success is built on courage, commitment and perseverance,” he said.

Mr Eric Videdu, Headmaster of the school, appealed to individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to support the completion of a stalled library project to enhance teaching and learning.

Mr and Mrs Amedza, parents of Bethel, and Mr David Adzokatse, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), were among those present at the ceremony.

Bethel expressed gratitude to Dr Nanewortor and Ms Lawson for the support, saying the gesture had inspired her to work harder to improve her academic performance.

The donation formed part of the couple’s broader efforts to support students facing challenges in accessing education and encourage young people to remain committed to their studies.
