Professor Christian Agyare, the newly invested Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has pledged to pursue transformative education and sustainable infrastructure development as key priorities of his administration.
He said the University would cultivate an organisational mindset that embraced continuous learning, innovation and adaptability to prepare the institution for future challenges and opportunities.
“The future belongs to institutions that are willing to learn, unlearn and relearn. Transformative education begins not with changing curricula alone, but with changing mindsets,” Prof Agyare stated.
He said this should not be seen merely as a strategic objective but as a culture that permeated every college, faculty, department, unit and stakeholder of the University.
Speaking at his investiture as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of KNUST in Kumasi, Prof Agyare said innovation must become an expectation rather than an exception within the institution.
“This means establishing recognition and reward systems that celebrate creative thinking, bold ideas, and transformational leadership at every level of our institution.”
On infrastructure development, Prof Agyare stressed the need for sustainable and climate-resilient facilities to support the University’s ambition of achieving global excellence.
He noted that a university aspiring to global prominence must be built on infrastructure that was modern, functional, sustainable and resilient.
According to him, sustainability would be integrated into every aspect of the University’s operations, from academic programmes and campus buildings to energy use and environmental management.
He said the modernisation and expansion of KNUST’s physical and digital infrastructure would remain a priority, with investments aimed at supporting world-class teaching, research, examinations, sports and recreational activities.
This will be done in a fully inclusive manner, ensuring that differently abled persons could participate fully in every aspect of university life with dignity and equal opportunity.
Prof Agyare said under his tenure, KNUST would adopt transformative teaching methods and dual-degree pathways to produce graduates who were innovative, entrepreneurial and socially responsible.
The collective goal, according to him, was to position KNUST as a forward-looking institution of higher learning that harnessed its intellectual capital, alumni network, and strategic partnerships to drive impactful research, innovation, and transformative teaching.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Chancellor of KNUST, swore in Prof Agyare as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University in a solemn ceremony on August 1, 2026.
Prof Agyare is a distinguished academic, accomplished researcher, and transformative institutional leader, whose career has been defined by excellence in pharmaceutical sciences, higher education management and global scientific engagement.
As he is invested as the Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, he brings to the office more than 25 years of exemplary service in research, teaching, innovation, academic leadership, and national development.
The new Vice-Chancellor has successfully attracted over US$11 million in research grants and institutional support from several internationally renowned funding organisations.
