Students urged to lead anti-corruption fight

Students of the Ashaiman Senior High School have been urged to champion the fight against corruption by adopting a culture of whistleblowing and actively resisting unlawful practices.

The call was made during a sensitisation engagement to mark the 2026 African Union Anti-Corruption Day (AUACD).

The event was a collaboration between the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) as the lead implementer of the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP).

Mr Godwin Dzivor, the NACAP Focal Person, educated the students on the devastating socio-economic impacts of corruption and equipped them with the knowledge to safely report illicit activities.

Mr Dzivor defined corruption as the abuse of entrusted power for private or personal gain, cautioning that it manifests in both high-level governance and everyday school environments like examination malpractice.

He elaborated on broader institutional forms of corruption, such as bribery, fraud, embezzlement, and nepotism, warning that they directly drained resources from the common purse, stalling critical public infrastructure development.

To counter the menace, he encouraged the students to embrace whistleblowing, describing it as an act of courage.

Mr Dzivor assured them that robust legal frameworks, such as the Whistleblower Act, 2006 (Act 720) and the Witness Protection Act, 2018 (Act 975), exist in Ghana to fully guarantee informant confidentiality and protection from victimisation.

He advised the students to report any observed wrongdoing to immediate authorities, including their teachers, headteachers, the police, or the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

He encouraged the public to utilise the anonymous reporting channels of the OSP via its toll-free line (0800-000-700) or contact the Ghana Advocacy and Legal Advice Centre (ALAC) to report institutional or state-level offences to help ensure that offenders were punished.
