At least three people have died, and several others have been injured after heavy rains triggered a mudslide and building collapse in the Cape Coast Metropolis over the weekend.
Authorities confirmed that 12-year-old Anastasia Abakah and 40-year-old Adwoa Baduwa died on Sunday when a single-room structure collapsed on them at Gyagyano.
Two others were rescued from the debris by the Ghana National Fire Service, which received the emergency call at 4:54 a.m.
In a separate incident on Friday, a 20-month-old toddler, Hanson Mensah, was killed when a mudslide swept through the Tantri district following hours of continuous rainfall.
Three women were injured in that event, with one transferred to a teaching hospital for treatment of a severe head injury.
The tragedies occurred as torrential rains caused widespread flooding across the metropolis, submerging roads, homes, and sections of the University of Cape Coast campus.
Overflowing drains and plastic waste exacerbated the situation, prompting transport disruptions and a university advisory urging students to remain indoors.
The Cape Coast Metropolitan Chief Executive visited the affected families, as residents called for urgent drainage improvements to prevent future disasters.
Emergency response teams remain on standby as the rainy season progresses.
