At least two people have died, and 14 others, including a police officer, have been injured in a violent disturbance during an annual Yam Festival at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region on Saturday, October 3, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Bono Regional Police Command and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the disturbance occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m., shortly after the festival programme had concluded, as the Nchiraahene, Nana Tabiri Yaw II, and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a gunshot was heard during the procession, which precipitated unrest at the Four Junction in the community.
The injured persons were transported to the Wenchi Methodist Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary of the same hospital for preservation and autopsy.
The Police Command said calm has since been restored in the area, and patrols have been intensified to prevent any further disturbances.
Authorities have indicated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the violence.
