The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has commissioned three automated water stations to enhance access to potable water for students on campus.
The projects, constructed at a cost of GH¢600,000, have been installed at the New Lecture Theatre (NLT), Sandwich Lecture Theatre (SLT) and Parliament House for the convenience of students.
The automated facilities require students to use prepaid electronic cards issued by the SRC to access the water for free.
Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC, who officially inaugurated the projects, commended the ingenuity of the SRC leadership in mitigating water challenges on campus.
He called on students and the newly elected SRC executives to use the facilities responsibly and support efforts to maintain them for the benefit of future students.
Mr Kwame Ntiamoah Ntim, President of the 63rd SRC, justifying the projects, highlighted the importance of a potable water supply on campus.
He said the project formed part of the SRC’s commitment to promoting healthy living and reducing the financial burden on students who regularly purchased sachet and bottled water.
In the spirit of sustainability and efficiency, he explained that the water system had been digitised to permit students to access water only through a preloaded electronic card distributed to students by the SRC.
Every student had been allocated approximately 1.5 litres of drinking water per day each semester, he explained.
“Every student is going to get a card with an amount of water loaded onto it. Once the allocation is exhausted, students can recharge the card to continue accessing the service,” he added.
“The facilities are not ordinary water dispensers. They are advanced purification systems which use Ultraviolet technology to remove impurities and ensure the water is safe for consumption,” Mr Ntim noted.
