Woman in viral assault video says husband beat her after she refused sex

A woman seen being beaten in a viral video has spoken publicly about the attack, saying her husband assaulted her after she refused to have sex with him.

The victim, identified as Harriet Amuzu from Ofankor near Accra, said the incident unfolded after her estranged husband demanded sex late at night. When she declined, she said he became furious and launched a violent assault that left her bruised and terrified. Part of the attack was captured on video and quickly spread on social media, prompting widespread outrage.

In recounting the ordeal, Miss Amuzu said she had made it clear she was unwilling to have sex, but her refusal triggered the assault.

The video shows her being hit repeatedly as she struggles to defend herself. According to her, this was not the first time he had been abusive, but the severity of the violence and the fact that it was recorded pushed her to speak out.

The viral clip drew strong condemnation from the public and from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, which described the attack as unacceptable and urged swift action.

The police later announced that the suspect had been arrested and was assisting with investigations.
