Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition deepens sensitisation against corruption in Western Region

The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) has organised a workshop to intensify the sensitisation campaign to educate citizens on the detrimental effects of corruption in the country.

The event was an initiative under the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for Resilience Democracy (PAIRED) programme, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

It is being implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in partnership with the Ministry of Finance, Ghana.

It is aimed at strengthening the rule of law and the fight against corruption in Ghana.

In the Western Region, the activities are being implemented in the Effia-Kwesimintsim, Wassa Amenfi West, and Ellembelle districts.

Mr Samuel Harrison Kujo, Programmes Officer, GACC, speaking during the event at Asankragua in the Amenfi West District, explained that the project sought to empower citizens to recognise, resist, and report corruption and its related practices to the appropriate authorities for action.

He added that the initiative was being implemented in 60 districts across all 16 regions of Ghana to deepen citizens’ participation in governance, accountability, and the fight against corruption.

“Corruption is not a one-man fight, and our goal is to build citizens’ capacity to identify corruption and speak out against it.

“We also want to ensure that Ghanaians understand the existing anti-corruption institutions, especially the Office of the Special Prosecutor,” he stated.

Mr Kujo emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and citizens’ vigilance in curbing corrupt practices at all levels and asked the participants to ambassadors against such acts in their communities.

Participants at the programme took turns to pledge to work together to tackle corruption and promote a culture of integrity among institutions in their areas.
