The Ministry of Education has directed the immediate suspension of the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School following allegations of sexual misconduct against a female student.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Ministry said the Honourable Minister considers the issue “serious” and has ordered the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take “effective immediate steps” to suspend Mr Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster, pending a full investigation.

The suspension follows an investigation by JoyNews and Manasseh Azure Awuni into the allegations against Abdulai.

The Ministry has also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters to commence investigations into the matter.

“The Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service reiterate that we would not tolerate or countenance such alleged despicable misconduct in any educational institution across the country,” the statement read.

It added that parents and guardians have entrusted their wards in the care of teachers “whose responsibilities are to protect and safeguard the children and not abuse them.”

The statement was signed by Hashmin Mohammed, Press Secretary to the Minister.

The suspension is effective immediately, though no timeline for the investigation has been announced.
